Grace

I sit on the bed, hugging my knees to my chest, my body still aching from the beatings I’ve endured the past four days. My eyes are swollen, I think I have a couple of broken ribs, and there’s dried blood in my hair from the gash that I can almost guarantee needs stitches. And to add to that, he’s forced himself on me sexually at least three times every day, refusing to wear a condom. It makes me sick thinking about how many women he’s been with while traveling with the NBA, and now he’s sleeping with me unprotected.

“Fuckin’ bastard,” I mutter softly, remembering Dimitri admitting to poking holes in our condoms for the past two months. He said he knew I was contemplating leaving, and the only way to keep me around would be to trap me with a baby. His baby. It makes me cringe at the thought of procreating with that monster.

I’ve been praying I don’t have or obtain an STD. That would be the fucking cherry. The day after the beating, I went into a full-on panic attack. I got sick—puking, sweating, fever, nausea, the works. It felt like I had the flu. Hopefully, that’s all it was.

My thoughts scatter like marbles when the door unlocks, and Kobe, Dimitri’s bodyguard, walks in holding a food tray. He’s a towering six-foot-six African American with a goatee and broad shoulders, and I’ve never seen him wearing anything but a black suit. His voice is so low and grumbly. I usually have to strain my ears to hear him. When he enters the room, I immediately make him aware I’m not in the mood for his company—especially with this shock collar around my neck.

I don’t dare speak. I’ve done it already, and it’s legit… I yelled after Kobe strapped the collar on me, and I about zapped myself shitless. Hurt like a bitch.

“I’ve turned it off… you can talk.”

Wasting no time, I snap, “What do you want?”

As usual, he doesn’t answer my question. He only responds with, “You’re welcome.”

“What do you mean I’m fuckin’ welcome? I’m locked up without my voice… I feel like the little mermaid up in here.”

I imagine the slightest smile creeping into the corner of his mouth. “It wouldn’t be like that if you didn’t do what you did.”

What the fuck!?

“And what exactly did I do?”

“Screamed for help. Dimitri didn’t like that when I told him.”

“Oh? So you wouldn’t have done the same thing if you were locked away against your will?” I challenge, knowing I can’t overpower him with force, but maybe I can break through to him—emotionally. Make him see how awful this all is.

Kobe falls silent for a moment before disregarding my words. “Dimitri is on his way back home from his tournament. He’s going to take you away somewhere.”

“What the F… where?”

“I’m not to disclose any more information.”

The thought of being taken away to some random somewhere by Dimitri terrifies me. “When will he be home?”

Kobe doesn’t answer. He just sets the food tray on the edge of my bed and stiffly starts back toward the door.
